Japanese head spa draws inspiration from a wider culture of considered bathing, personal care and relaxation, where time devoted to slowing down can become a ritual in itself.
Japan also has a long history of hands-on massage traditions. Anma developed in Japan over centuries, while shiatsu emerged later as a distinct form of Japanese bodywork. These traditions form part of the broader cultural landscape surrounding touch, pressure and considered personal care.
Today's head spa is a modern salon experience. It brings together dedicated hair and scalp care with massage, cleansing and time to unwind — transforming something ordinarily functional into something deliberately unhurried.

At Cloud 9, the emphasis is not on recreating a traditional Japanese treatment or claiming to practise shiatsu or anma.
Instead, Ruth and Lynne have taken inspiration from the considered, ritual-like approach associated with Japanese head spa and created an experience of their own in Harpenden — centred around personal care, calm surroundings and time away from the pace of everyday life.
